Features:

Recommendations:

• It is essential that the waterproofing membrane is inspected by a Protan Technical Representative before the green roof element is installed. The PROGREEN waterproofing membrane is mechanically fixed when used in a turf roof application.

• The green roof system must be able to drain freely so that the vegetation does not become ponded in water, but must be able to store enough water to survive drought conditions.

• A Protan approved horticultural consultant should assess the individual roof to specify a suitable system.

System design:

• Suitability of Protan Green Roof Systems is subject to inspection and wind calculations carried out by Protan (UK) Ltd.

• The weight loading of the system will vary considerably depending on the planting schemes to be incorporated.

• A structural engineer must be consulted to access the load bearing capacity of the roof and building structure.

Substrate:

• Concrete roof decking.

• Plywood WBP to BS 5268–2 and BS EN 636–3, minimum thickness 18 mm.

• Profiled galvanized steel deck, minimum recommended thickness 0.7 mm to BS EN 10147 Fe E280G Z275.

• Roofing Grade OSB Board to BS EN 300, Grade 3, minimum thickness 18 mm.

• Timber Boarding, minimum thickness 25 mm.

Installation:

• The waterproofing membrane layer must be installed by Protan (UK) Ltd Approved Applicators.

• The design and layout of the waterproofing system are the responsibility of Protan (UK) Ltd Technical Services.

• All installed roofing membranes must be inspected by a Protan (UK) Ltd Technical Manager during installation.

• A leak test must be performed prior to the green roof layers being installed.

• The planted element of the system must be installed by a partner green roof contractor who has expertise in the installation and upkeep of a healthy, functional green roofing system.

• Turf Roof hooks are installed at 600 mm centres at the eaves of the roof. The hooks support barge boards which bear a portion of the weight of the turf on the roof.

Maintenance and inspection:

• It is recommended that the roof area be inspected in spring and autumn, to identify any evidence of damage, cleaning of gutters and to ensure outlets are clear and free flowing.

• The planted element should also be inspected and maintained at these times.

• Protan F2B Fleece, laid over timber roof deck - Specify in section J42.

• Protan PROGREEN Membrane - Specify in section J42.

• Turf growing medium. Thickness: 150–200 mm. Weight: 150–250 kg/m².
