James Dyson launched his first vacuum cleaner, the DC01, in 1993. It quickly became a household name. Today Dyson vacuum cleaners are sold in over 45 countries and Dyson is market leader in the UK & Europe. Dyson’s decision to invest heavily in research and development means it has been able to diversify the application of new technology. The first Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer (AB01) was launched in October 2006. By February 2009, the AB03 Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer - made of tough polycarbonate ABS - was available. Launched in October 2009, The Dyson Air Multiplier™ fan replaces spinning blades with an aerofoil loop amplifier. In producing a smooth stream of cool air, it’s an efficient way to keep buildings cool. Ten years of work on motors resulted in the Dyson digital motor. Instead of carbon brushes, it uses a powerful magnetic field to spin its impeller five times faster than the motor of a Formula One car. Dyson’s engineers and scientists are continually working on new developments and inventions at the Wiltshire headquarters. In taking a problem as the starting point, Dyson machines exemplify function-led design and the importance of approaching challenges by thinking differently.
