Named as a Kevin McCloud ‘Eco Find of the Month’ in the April 2012 edition of Grand Designs Magazine, Medite Tricoya MDF heralds a revolution in wood based panel products for exterior, interior and wet applications, and marks one of the first true innovations in the wood composites industry in more than 30 years. Kevin said, “One Coillte product that is set to take construction by storm is Medite Tricoya, an acetylised MDF that is fully weatherproof and can be used externally for cladding, doors, and a host of other applications. Does it require synthetic inputs? Is it impregnated with gallons of petrochemical resins? Not really. Like all good conkers, it’s made with vinegar.”

Medite Tricoya MDF has superior dimensional stability and durability even in changing weather conditions, meaning it can be used in situations and applications where wood and wood-based products would not usually be considered including wet interiors such as wall linings in swimming pools, bathrooms, wet rooms, changing rooms, lockers and cubicles, play frames, tree houses, exterior composite furniture, façade cladding and siding, fascia, soffit panels and other secondary exterior applications, window and door components, door panels and skins, signage, sound barriers; the list goes on.

After extensive performance testing carried out by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in the UK, Medite Tricoya was given a durability class (under EN350-2) of 1, or very durable; a durability equivalent to teak and more durable than oak. BRE said that Medite Tricoya could meet demands for a desired service life of 60 years when used in exterior applications and such is Medite’s confidence in this new product that it carries a 50 year warranty.

Putting Medite Tricoya to the test

For this year’s Royal Windsor Horse Show, an exhibition stand was required by event partner Land Rover to form the Queen’s plinth, and Timbmet Ltd. in Oxfordshire supplied 80 sheets of new extreme durable Medite Tricoya MDF for the project. The maiden appearance of the Medite Tricoya stand was in the rain-sodden open air for a period of around three weeks, covering the time needed for construction, the duration of the show, and to dismantle. Despite the conditions endured, the stand sections will be able, as planned, to be reused for future shows, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed. With only occasional cosmetic repair and standard maintenance, Land Rover will be able to reuse the stands for years to come.

The product’s superior dimensional stability and durability also proved itself at the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show. Whilst the weather showed definite improvement over the five day show, the wet and damp conditions during set-up could have been disastrous for three garden companies using MDF in the exterior products they were featuring at Chelsea, were it not Medite Tricoya.

Medite Tricoya provides a uniform product for both manufacturers and end-users, and consistently delivers a reliable substrate with excellent design opportunities in exterior and wet interior applications.
