Stairs are components providing pedestrian access to and between different floors and levels of a building, ancillary spaces and installations. Materials for stairs depend on the requirements of stairway function or location: e.g. metal, timber, concrete and stone. Stair finishes are applied to the surface of stairs, ramps, including preparatory work, sub-layers or supports, including stair nosings, stair treads, stair trims, carpet grippers and rods.
Access ladders are portable or fixed ladders specifically for the maintenance of building façades and accessories. Escape Stairs are stairways or ladders designed to provide emergency exits e.g. during a fire. Loft Ladders are fixed ladders providing access to a loft space and may be concertina, collapsible or sliding.
