A living wall system using natural soil to ensure that the plants are in their natural environment. The bespoke module is manufactured from recycled material and can also be recycled.

When planning a living wall, careful plant selection is crucial. Choosing the wrong type of plants can ultimately lead to the plants dying resulting in dead patches in the wall or higher maintenance costs to replace the plants and keep the wall alive. On a living wall the planting is very dense (96 plants per m²) to give a very visual feature. Certain plants have constraints such as limited space for their roots to develop and perform their normal cycle. These 'pocket systems' normally require higher plant replacements as the plants die off - the modular natural soil system is the ideal solution for this issue. The central section can move allowing the plants roots to migrate throughout the entire module.

Features and benefits:

- Exterior living wall:

  • Instant eye catching impact on the street.
  • Protects exterior walls from weather damage and corrosion.
  • Adds to urban biodiversity, attracts bees, butterflies, insects, bats and birds.
  • Keeps building cooler in summer as well as warmer in winter.
  • Reduces building’s overall carbon footprint.
  • Adds sound insulation from city noise.
  • Pre-grown modules create instant visual results.
  • Modular system means easy installation and maintenance.

- Interior living wall:

  • Living wall art with bespoke design makes a brand statement in retail spaces or reception areas.
  • Use as a living wall room divider to section office space or partition meeting areas.
  • Interior living walls creates a striking interior design feature in homes.
  • Choose from wide range of foliage and flowering plants.
  • Brings seasonal variations in natural leaf and bloom colours indoors.
  • Modular with fully automated irrigation system.
  • Easy maintenance.
  • Helps balance humidity in stuffy interiors and improve air quality.

  • Hotels and resorts
  • Pubs, restaurants and bars.
  • Residential housing and commercial building façades.
  • Universities, collages and schools.
  • Billboards and branding.
  • Retail outlets, government and local authority buildings.
  • Airports, offices and workspaces.
  • Kitchens, balconies and roof gardens.

In natural environments, different plant species thrive in various light levels. However in areas where no natural light is present (particularly indoors) it is essential to artificially create the right light intensity and colour temperature to support healthy plant growth:

  • A minimum of 250 Foot Candles (FC) is required for a long lasting living wall.
  • For a healthy living wall a minimum of 3000 Kelvin (K) is required.

Standard product features

Each living wall system includes a built-in irrigation unit. The irrigation pipes are hidden from view but fulfil a critical role. The supply of water to the wall is essential to healthy plant development. The back of each living wall module is kept moist facilitating the natural composting of mature roots. Harvested rainwater from the building roof can be used for the wall.

Installation and maintenance:

The standard method is to fix back to an existing structure, such as concrete or brickwork. A steel or timber frame can also be added, if required. The living wall modules are pre-grown providing instant impact from the day of installation. All living walls require a maintenance schedule, which will be tailored to each project based on the location, aspect, plant mix, light levels and seasonal changes.

An extensive range of plants are available including those selected especially for exterior or interior living walls, those for a north facing wall (in a shady area with high winds for example) and the possibility of having logo or brand icons recreated within the planting modules. Herbs (thyme, mint or sage) and soft fruit (strawberries) can also be installed in a living wall. Consult manufacturer for detailed information.

Black plastic gutter installed as standard, however various drainage channels can also be installed, consult manufacturer for details.

- Hunter controller:

Entry-level controller offers simple operation with 'smart' SolarSync compatibility. With easy-to-configure control for up to eight stations, including three programs and four start times each, the X-Core is suitable for smaller living walls. Plug in the Solar Sync ET sensor and the X-Core is converted into a 'smart controller' that regulates irrigation runtimes based on locally measured weather.

- Heron controller:

Operates 4-144 valves. Models sizes available for 4, 8, 12 or 16 valves. Models can be upgraded to support more valves. The controller includes a range of software features which can be customized to meet project requirements. Valves can be individually named. Produce irrigation programs, running any valve in any order. Run up to six valves in parallel. Large display and menu driven operation Option to operate the controller via a PC or a mobile phone. Integrates with sensors and dosing systems. Remote monitoring from ANS Group Global Ltd.'s servers is also possible.
